Drug use Among Undergraduates in Maiduguri, Northeast Nigeria

Background: Drug use among students is a public health problem and the academic consequences cannot be overemphasized. Objectives: This study aimed to determine prevalence pattern of drug undergraduates in Maiduguri identify predictors. Methods: cross-sectional was conducted tertiary institutions Metropolis, Nigeria. Data were collected using WHO Student Use questionnaire. The data with survey instrument included sex, age, studentship, job status past 12-months various drugs used. Descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean standard deviation initially used describe data. Chi-Square Fisher’s exact tests test for significant difference, while multivariate logistic regression determinants P-value < 0.05 taken Results: overall 14.3%. Tobacco (9.6%) followed by alcohol (8.1%) most frequently drug. Being university student (odds ratio = 1.88 [1.23 - 2.89]) compared polytechnic student, being male (1.55 [1.04 2.31]) female, aged 26 35 years (1.48 [0.95 18 25 significantly more likely drugs. Additionally, part-time (2.16 [1.11 4.21]) no studentship 12 months, having paid jobs (2.11 [1.36 3.27]) none Conclusions: Our revealed that considerable proportion higher education Nigeria has grave implications these may result mental disorders poor performance. highlights importance an effective prevention policy institutions.
